This Ordinary Day Is Sacred — A Closing Meditation

Every issue of Free Your Mind ends the same way. Not with a summary. Not with a call to action. With a reminder. The most important reminder available to a human being, delivered gently and without fanfare, because it is so simple that the mind keeps sliding past it toward something more complicated.

The reminder is this: this ordinary day is sacred.

Not the dramatic days. Not the retreat weekends or the breakthrough moments or the days when everything aligns and the practice comes alive and the peace is palpable. This one. The one with the laundry and the commute and the meeting that goes too long and the person who pushes your buttons and the sandwich you ate standing over the sink because you were in too much of a hurry to sit down.

This ordinary, unremarkable, never-to-be-repeated day is the day your practice is for. This is the container. Everything arises in this.

What Makes It Sacred

The sage tradition does not teach that certain moments are sacred and others are ordinary. It teaches that all moments are equally the expression of the same awareness — the same ground of being, the same presence, the same love. What differs is not the sacredness of the moment but the quality of attention brought to it.

The cup of tea that is drunk with full presence — feeling the warmth, tasting the flavor, grateful for the simple fact of this particular cup on this particular morning — is a sacred act. The same cup drunk while scrolling through news and worrying about the day ahead is just a cup of tea. The moment itself is the same. The awareness brought to it is different. And the awareness is everything.

A Closing Practice

Before you put down this issue of Free Your Mind — before you return to the day, to the list, to the demands that are waiting — take one moment. Just one.

Look at where you are. Really look. Notice the quality of the light. Notice the sounds. Notice how your body feels in this chair, on this couch, in this corner of the world. Notice that you are breathing. Notice that you are aware.

And then — before the next thought carries you away — let yourself feel, however briefly, the extraordinary ordinariness of being here. Alive. Aware. Present. On this particular day, in this particular life, which will not come again.

This ordinary day is the sacred one. This is the path. This is the practice. This is the whole teaching, gathered into one breath, one moment, one return to the awareness that has always been here.
